A CIPD survey of HR professionals in the UK has found that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is the most recognised qualification, which Most recognised voluntary qualification is DofE, survey findshighlights an individual’s voluntary experience – especially when going through the recruitment process.

The findings also found that more than 25 per cent of employers in the UK prioritise the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, when reviewing candidates’ applications, over other recognised voluntary qualifications.

When looking through job applications, HR professionals consider voluntary experience as an important factor, with 2 in 3 employers considering entry-level candidates with voluntary experience more employable than candidates without.

More than 75 per cent of those surveyed claimed that voluntary qualifications portray communication and teamwork abilities, as well as time management, multi-tasking, adaptability and leadership skills.

However, irrespective of the findings, few employers are actively looking for voluntary experience, according to the DofE.

CEO of The Duke of Edinburgh Award, Peter Westgarth, said of the findings: “Whilst we’re hugely encouraged that a significant number of UK employers recognise the important employability skills and attributes DofE Award achievers have demonstrated, we still have work to do to inform employers about the amazing achievements a DofE Award represents.

We want every UK employer to understand the value of a DofE Award on an applicant’s CV and make the commitment to look out for young recruits with a DofE Award because they value the experience they have gained and recognise that their efforts make them great employees.”

Ian Peters, Managing Director of British Gas – one of the businesses which signed up to support the DofE promotion for business – said of the qualification: “In doing the DofE they [young people] develop the skills we look for in our future employees… I’d encourage employers to recognise the valuable skills and attributes of DofE Award holders.”
