Around one third of shoppers in Britain and Europe use their mobile phone to save money on grocery bills

Around one third of shoppers in Britain and Europe use their mobile phone to save money on grocery bills: A survey conducted by the IRI analysed shopping habits from those in the UK and compared the statistics to shoppers in Europe, including countries such as: Germany, Greece, Italy, Holland, France and Spain.

With a third of Brits (31%) and EU shoppers (36%) using the internet to research product prices, FMCG markets have been advised to take these statistics as an opportunity to connect with shoppers, by targeting their advertisements through mobile devices.

The results revealed that shoppers in the UK and Europe are more likely to use mobile devices to help cheapen their expenses.

Furthermore, that the majority of both EU and UK shoppers use mobile devices to find promotions and offers to help reduce costs on expensive items, such as make-up and laundry products. 53 per cent of those agreed that save money on their overall shopping bill.

However, those in Britain said they used their mobiles...

·      In store when shopping (31%)

·      To find promotions (17%)

·      To access digital vouchers (10%)

Statistics also indicated that some European shoppers are more prudent when saving money, as they too use the internet to plan their purchases.

Countries who are more likely to plan their purchases are as followed:

·      Greece (45%)

·      Spain (39%)

·      Germany (37%)

·      Italy (33%)

Livio Martucci, Director at IRI and analyst of the survey said:

“[There is an] Increased demand for healthier food options, such as vegan or gluten free, and concern about food provenance is clearly of key importance for Infoseekers. Further, they may also be looking to reduce waste for cost and environmental issues.”

She adds:“There is clearly an opportunity for them [FMCG marketers] to use mobile advertising and promotions while shoppers are in list prepping mode, as well as when they are in store.”
