According to data, British people are drinking less tea and eating more junk food. As well as this, the figures showed that toast is decreasing in popularity.Research shows Brits are consuming more junk and drinking less tea

In recent decades, British people have taken steps towards better diets, for example, drinking low-calorie soft drinks, consuming more fresh fruit and opting for skimmed milk. However, the weekly consumption of pizza, crisps, ready meals and chips has rocketed.

The figures came from the National Food Survey, a survey which has been taking place since World War Two. The survey findings were published by Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) as part of its open data scheme.

When comparing the findings from the 150,000 households who took part in the survey between 1974 and 2000, with that of 2000 to 2014, it can been seen that there has been a significant shift from white bread, to wholemeal, brown and other breads. However, British people have scaled back their bread consumption by 40 per cent since 1974. The figures suggest that, based on a medium slice of 40g bread, the amount of bread eaten has decreased from 25 slices, to 15 slices per week.

Since 1974, it was found that spreads such as margarine, butter and dripping has decreased.

The findings also showed that the amount of tea consumed by Brits has also fallen since 1974, with the amount drank per person decreasing from 68g to 25g per week. Based on one portion of tea, or one teabag, weighing approximately 3g, Brits are drinking an average of 8 mugs per person per week, as opposed to 23 mugs in 1974.

As well as this, the amount of fish and chips eaten also seems to have fallen. Whereas consumption of chips alone has increased notably. Between 1974 and 2014, the amount of white fish and takeaway fish has more than halved.

It was also found that the amount of fresh veg eaten has remained the same since 1974, however, we are eating less greens, instead opting for mushrooms, courgettes, aubergines and stir fry vegetables.
