Mitchell and Butlers’ data revealed that the number of bookings taken throughout December has increased by three times since 2012, with 65 per cent of the participants revealing that they expect to eat more than two Christmas dinners. A further 7 per cent said that they are anticipating more than five Christmas dinners.

The Marketing Director of Mitchell and Butlers, Catriona Kempston, said that although Christmas dinners do not come stress-free, many people are having more than one Christmas dinner as a result of Christmas catch ups with friends and family.

She also added that one reason for the increasing amount of Christmas dinners being consumed is that eating out is convenient and takes the worry of cooking away. Kempston suggested that this makes the idea of having Christmas dinner at a restaurant more appealing.

Of the respondents, 82 per cent said that they would be celebrating Christmas with their family, which 62 per cent said that they are looking forward to the most. Following family celebrations, 30 per cent said they are looking forward to gatherings with friends and 20 per cent are looking forward to office parties.

As part of the research, the respondents were also asked how far they would be willing to travel to eat a Christmas meal. Of the respondents, 75 per cent said that they would travel a maximum of five miles.

When looking at the responses by region, it was found that respondents in the East Midlands would travel more than 21 miles for a Christmas meal and those in Wales and the South West would travel more than 50 miles.
