Research finds fidgeting whilst sat down could be healthy

A recent study, by a team of researchers at the University of Leeds and University College London, has revealed that fidgeting whilst sat down Research finds fidgeting whilst sat down could be healthycould help keep health problems such as obesity, diabetes and cancer at bay, which can all occur as a result of prolonged periods of sitting.

The researchers set out analysing data from the University of Leeds' UK Women's Cohort Study, where information had been collected about eating patterns of nearly 35,000 women aged between 35 and 69.

The research participants were asked to complete a survey about their health, fitness levels, any chronic diseases and fidgeting habits.

The survey revealed that the participants who deemed themselves to be moderately or very fidgety whilst sitting down for a long period of time were not at a greater risk of mortality than women who were very active. Although, the researchers did discover that there was a greater risk of mortality amongst women who consider themselves to be very occasional fidgeters.

Gareth Hagger-Johnson, a co-author of the study from the University College London, said of the research findings:

'Our results support the suggestion that it's best to avoid sitting still for long periods of time, and even fidgeting may offer enough of a break to make a difference.'

Professor Janet Cade, from the School of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds, also said:

'While further research is needed, the findings raise questions about whether the negative associations with fidgeting, such as rudeness or lack of concentration, should persist if such simple movements are beneficial for our health.'

The research findings were published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
