As part of the study, the researchers spoke to 1,000 workers, of which 141 were employed within the manufacturing sector. Of the employees in the manufacturing sector, 81 per cent said that their place of work is a health hazard.

A further 50 per cent of manufacturing employees said that they had suffered from an injury at work and an additional 32 per cent had gone to hospital as a direct result.

The survey findings also suggested that the average manufacturing worker suffered from three injuries at work, two of which had occurred in the last year. The causes for such injuries were cited as cluttered floors (11 per cent), obstructions (16 per cent) and wet floors or stairs (24 per cent). As well as this, defective equipment contributed to 13 per cent of injuries which took place in workplaces and a further 10 per cent said that their tools were sub-standard.

Hayward Baker claimed that the grave issue of factory employees’ health and safety protection had gotten worse, with 24 per cent admitting to handling heavy items incorrectly and without the correct equipment – this ended up with injury as a result.

Of the manufacturing employees, 56 per cent said that they had spoken to their managers and bosses about the health and safety issues within their place of work; however, 25 per cent of the managers did not take action to help resolve the issue.

In the most severe cases of injury at work, 8 per cent said that they had suffered from a dislocated joint and a further 6 per cent said that they had lost a limb.
