Top consumer annoyance is unhelpful staff, survey finds

A recent consumer survey has revealed that unhelpful staff are the biggest annoyance to UK shoppers, with 43 per cent of people citing Top consumer annoyance is unhelpful staff, survey findsunknowledgeable sales assistants as irritating.

As part of the 2015 retailer survey by Which?, the researchers asked the respondents to reveal what they find most irritating about in-store shopping.

According to the findings, the respondents aged between 18 and 24 were not as annoyed by unhelpful staff, with just 28 per cent agreeing that it was an irritation, whilst 48 per cent of those aged between 55 and 64 said that unhelpful staff are indeed an annoyance.

When exploring the demographics of who gets irritated by unhelpful sales assistants, it can be seen that males are more likely than females to be annoyed.

Following unhelpful staff, other irritations identified by UK consumers were: queuing, crowded shops, expensive prices and poor shopping experience. Poor shopping experience refers to customers having difficulty finding products and stores being untidy. Each of these is a frustration for 39%.

However, 5 per cent of the survey respondents said that they do not find anything irritating about shopping in-store.

The 9,500 UK consumers in the survey also revealed the shops which they considered as the best.

Appearing on the list of the best shops in the UK were: Debenhams, John Lewis, M&S and Currys PC World, Lakeland and Screwfix.

With two in three (or 68 per cent) of people shopping on the high street at least once every two weeks, it is important that retailers make their customers more satisfied with their in-store experience by improving the issues that they consider annoying.
