ZenithOptimedia’s New Media Forecast revealed that the increase in adoption of mobile devices, to engage with video, TV and other media, is showing no signs of slowing down.

According to the report, by the end of 2015, more than half (51 per cent) of British people will own a tablet computer, a significant increase on the 3.5 per cent noted just 5 years ago. Therefore, the United Kingdom falls at the 7th highest in the world.

By 2018, the survey suggested that 65 per cent of British people will own or have frequent access to a tablet computer, which will rank 6th following Hong Kong, Singapore, the Netherlands, Denmark and Switzerland. The increasing adoption of the tablet device is similar to that of the smartphone, with 55 per cent of those in the United Kingdom expected to own a smartphone by the end of 2015, increasing to 69 per cent by 2018.

Johnathan Barnhard, Head of Forecasting at ZenithOptimedia, said of the market research findings:

“The rapid spread of mobile technology is transforming media consumption and marketing communications across the world. For more and more people, their smartphone or tablet is the first place they look for information or entertainment. Marketers need a mobile-first approach to communicate with these people effectively.”

ZenithOptimedia’s report also revealed that within three years the amount of those who use the internet, in the 47 countries the New Media Forecast monitors, will surpass the 2 billion mark for the first time since the survey began.

ZenithOptimedia believes that the survey of 47 countries spans 60 per cent of all internet users globally.
