10 UK art museums ranked in the top 100 most visited art museums in the world: A recent survey into the most popular art museums in the world has uncovered that 10 of the top 100 are located in the UK. Paris (10) is the only city that has more museums in the top 100 than London (8), with the World Museum in Liverpool and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh also included in the list.

The study by the Art Newspaper, found that there were 71 million visitors to art museums around the world in 2021, an increase from the 54 million in 2020. However, the pandemic is still having a significant impact, found the research, as levels are still down on the 230 million people who visited art museums in 2019.

Although the UK has the most museums within the top 100, Russia has four of the top 10 most visited art museums; located in Moscow and St Petersburg. The most visited UK museum in 2021 was the British Museum in London with just over 1.3million visitors; an increase of 4% from 2020.

While the pandemic affected all art museums differently, Europe was hit the worst, according to the data, with British, Dutch and German art museums being shut for an average of 142 days over the year.

The National Gallery recorded the greatest decrease in visitors over the last couple of years, with a fall of 41% from 2020, and a drop of 88% from 2019. Despite being open for the same number of days in 2021, the British Museum had significantly more visitors.

When comparing the number of visitors in 2020 and 2021, the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow was shown to have had the greatest increase, rising by 421%. On the other hand, the Faberge Museum in St Petersburg saw the greatest decrease in attendees, with -42%.
