The survey was conducted internationally and questioned 500 logistics professionals from the United Kingdom, the United States, Benelux and Nordics, to reveal that the industry needs to simplify the supply chain, refine key performance indicators (KPIs) and give the customer a consistent customer experience across all channels.

In the last couple of decades, distribution companies have made notable improvements in agility and efficiency by streamlining the supply chain. Despite this, both business and consumer customers are becoming increasingly demanding, which has created a more complicated supply chains and fulfilment models for wholesalers, manufacturers and logistics firms alike. As a result, gains are put at risk.

Of the respondents, 62 per cent said that they now have a business to business to consumer (B2B2C) fulfilment model, which means that customer experience and visibility is becoming more important than ever before.

In an effort to improve the customer experience, 61 per cent of the participants said that they are actively being more consistent in the experience across channels and a further 56 per cent of the organisations are making it possible for people to access systems on more devices.

The respondents cited the visibility and traceability of products as one of the top five biggest challenges for a company’s supply chain. As well as this, refining the KPI structure also was found to be at the top of the agenda for many companies, with a further 41 per cent of respondents stating that they believe that there are too many key performance indicators to effectively manage.
