Of the survey respondents, 57.3 per cent said that targeting savings is their main concern for the year, closely followed by improving planning accuracy at 14.5 per cent and increasing profitability at 9.7 per cent.

The survey revealed that the businesses which responded expect there to be some barriers to achieving their objectives, such as economic uncertainty, skills shortages and eroding margins.

When the logistics businesses in the survey were questioned about the biggest hurdles they were facing in 2017, it was found that 33.9 per cent were experiencing a shortage of drivers and skilled workers, 26.3 per cent highlighted rising transport costs and a further 18.6 per cent said that they were being challenged by a decrease in economic growth.

Further to this, the survey participants said that a lack of investment, system integration, operational data and management buy-in was hindering their likelihood to achieve their objectives, from a planning perspective, in the future.

Of the operators in the survey, just 5.9 per cent per cent said that they felt Brexit was going to be the most significant issue for the next 12 months, however, 59.3 per cent of the respondents felt that Brexit would have a negative effect on their company and 15 per cent said that they feel the impact will be significantly negative. On the other hand, just 6.2 per cent of respondents feel that the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union was a positive step for the nation, but the remaining 34.5 per cent said that they do not anticipate that there will be a noticeable impact of Brexit.
