Local Students Complete Work Experience With DJS Research

In a continued effort to give back to the local community, DJS Research recently offered work experience placements to two students from local schools – Lady Manners School and New Mills School. The initiative, now in its second year, was greeted with enthusiasm by members of staff. Lyn Allen, a Senior Research Executive at DJS Research, had the following to say:

I thought both the students were fantastic. Rebecca was very thorough and precise, exactly the traits we’d be looking for in a market researcher. Aaron’s real speciality was his presenting; he was very confident and looked like he’d been doing it all his life.”

The students, who were given the opportunity to try their hand at all aspects of the market research process, concluded their time at the company by giving a presentation of the skills they had learnt whilst on the placement and what they might have gained from their time at DJS Research. Rebecca, the student from Lady Manners, said:

“The skills I’ll take away from DJS include a whole range of new things. My confidence, both when on the phone and when addressing large groups has improved and I’ve learnt some skills specific to the industry such as questionnaire development and creating a topic guide. I have really enjoyed my time here and if I could have spent another week here I would!”

Aaron’s presentation was the second experienced by staff at DJS. After a discussion of focus group observation, script checking and desk research into soft drink branding, Aaron went to say that he had enjoyed the past fortnight:

One of the main ideas of work experience is to be educated as to what it is like to work on a full-time basis in a place of work. I have been busy learning all about the different types of market research (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, focus groups and hall tests). I never got nervous and enjoyed working with the company's employees.”

Laura Crowe, the Researcher in charge of DJS Research’s work experience initiative felt the fortnight had been very successful:

It’s been great. Rebecca and Aaron have been fantastic and engaged fully with all our staff. I hope the experience is going to be really useful to them in their future lives – maybe they’ll end up in market research!”
