Fresh produce storage advice

Business challenge: As part of a wider project to develop behaviour change interventions to reduce the amount of food that is wasted in UK citizens’ homes, our client wanted to test the effectiveness of a number of food storage interventions to encourage correct storage of fresh produce.

Our approach: After in-home placement of different food storage interventions with  a qualitative sample, we adopted a mobile ethnography approach to capture in-the-moment user experience via video footage of themselves interacting with the interventions and a record/note of any thoughts they had, or problems encountered. Follow up depth interviews then provided a more reflective review of their user experience.

Outcome: Our research not only highlighted which interventions had most potential to positively change behaviour (and ensure correct storage of fresh produce), but it also identified the barriers to change and their underlying causes. A number of recommended improvements were put forward ahead of a wider quantitative pilot of the interventions.
