A verbatim is a 'word for word' statement or response from a respondent or research participant. Verbatims are typically an output of quantitative research, but may also fall out of open-ended questions in quantitative research studies. Verbatims are particularly effective when paired with quantitative data - the data gives the big picture of what is going on, whilst verbatims give examples of reasons of why this might be happening.
