Between 5th July and 16th July 2010, DJS Research Ltd was pleased to welcome two year 10 students, Thilina Prathapasin and Jordan Murphy, into its Whaley Bridge offices to take part in the company’s inaugural work experience scheme. Thilina and Jordan are currently studying their GCSEs at local school, New Mills School Business and Enterprise College.

DJS Research Ltd is an international market research agency, founded in 2001 and based in Whaley Bridge, which has experienced strong growth in recent years, despite the economic downturn and recession. The company has always placed an emphasis on supporting the local community, with many of its employees living in the surrounding towns and villages. As part of this continuing local initiative, DJS Research contacted New Mills School Business and Enterprise College to explore the possibility of two students participating in a work experience scheme. The school was extremely receptive to the idea and both parties quickly moved to develop a scheme that would broaden participants’ commercial awareness.

The work experience scheme is led by Dan Williams, Senior Research Executive and former pupil of New Mills School, and supported by Danny Sims, Managing Director of DJS Research, whose children are educated locally. The purpose of the scheme is to provide local students with an insight into the workings of a successful agency whilst providing valuable experience to furnish future job and academic applications.

During the placements, Thilina and Jordan spent time in a range of departments and were exposed to all aspects of the research process. They were provided with real-life research tasks, which were performed to a high standard. Other activities included supporting the team with general office tasks and attending internal and client meetings.

The scheme was hailed as a great success by all involved and DJS Research has already started to receive applications for its 2011 scheme.

Dan Williams, Senior Research Executive, DJS Research Ltd said:
“The scheme has been a great success. The students were enthusiastic and willing to learn and had a positive impact on the office environment. Having been through both academic and job recruitment procedures myself, I know first-hand how valuable this experience will be to the students.”

Danny Sims, Managing Director, DJS Research Ltd said:
“Over the past few years, DJS Research has grown exponentially, however we have always taken time to give back to the local community and will continue to do so. Having these two intelligent young men in the office has been a refreshing experience and they have made a real contribution to our work. And, it is of course, always good to keep an eye on the bright prospects of the future!”
