To sign up to paid focus groups you will be using a website called Opinion Exchange, which is ran by DJS Research. Opinion Exchange will send out emails to all of the members signed up, inviting them to take part in paid research tasks like focus groups. DJS Research uses Opinion Exchange to find people eligible to take part in the research they are conducting for clients. Opinion Exchange is basically a panel of people willing to take part in paid research, just like you. Becoming a member of Opinion Exchange is free, there are no sign up fees and you won't be charged to receive invites to research either. There are also no hidden fees.

Once you become an Opinion Exchange panel member, you will be ready to start completing research and you will also start receiving emails inviting you to take part in focus groups for money. As a member you will be protected by the Market Research Society Code of Conduct and the Data Protection Act, meaning your details/data will not be shared without your permission or be used for anything other than research purposes. DJS Research do get permission to contact you through email or phone once you sign up but this will only be regarding research opportunities and not anything unwanted like sales or spam.

What is a Focus Group and what are they for?

A focus group consists of around 6-10 people and a moderator who runs the group, it is basically a group interview/guided discussion. The moderator will go through a number of topics and you will give back your opinions and thoughts on the topic being spoken about, whilst answering any questions the researcher asks. Focus groups give the researchers a wider range of points than what a normal one-one interview would, gives a range of customer feedback and also can help find unseen issues that haven't been recognised previously. The focus groups are for research purposes, DJS Research will be conducting the focus groups in order to find out specific things for a client's research requests.

Sometimes in a focus group, the discussion might need to be audio recorded or sometimes even recorded with a camera. The footage will only be used for research and won't be shared anywhere else, it is so the researchers can go back over it in the analysis part of the research. You don't need to worry about anything like third parties, as they won't be involved and you will be kept anonymous throughout.

The focus groups can either be online (on a website like Zoom) or in-person at a location near you. On average they last around 1 hour and 30 minutes but it can be anywhere in-between 1-2 hours. The longer they tend to last the larger the sum of money you will make, you will make anywhere from £30-£150 but this depends on the subject matter, what type of people are needed and how long the group lasts. Focus groups tend to be paid in cash on the day of the group. All the details that you will need to know will be included in the invitation email so make sure you read through this carefully.

In a focus group you are expected to share your thoughts and opinions actively and contribute answers and responces to the topics being spoken about, if you do this we will be able to get the maximium data out of the research task.

How often do opportunities come up?

We cannot guarantee how often chances for you to take part in focus groups for money will arise but when they do we do suggest that you take the chance, as opportunities may not be frequent due to clients wanting to speak to specific types of people, like water bill payers for example. To increase your chances of being picked to take part in a focus group then make sure you fill out the profiling survey after you have signed up because the more we know about you, the more likely you are to fit the client's requirements.
