UK comparison website uSwitch has conducted a survey to rank the quality of life in European countries, with the UK coming last on the list for the second year in a row.

More than 2000 UK residents were surveyed in the study. The quality of life index looked at a range of variables such as income, life expectancy, the cost of goods including fuel and food plus government spending on health and education.

Lack of sunshine and the depressed economy resulting in fewer holidays are among the main factors blamed for the poor quality of life in Blighty.

Britain has been found to have the second-lowest hours of sunshine each year, 5.5 days fewer annual holidays and the fourth-highest retirement age compared to the European average.

Even Denmark, Poland, Sweden and Ireland all placed above the UK.

France topped the list, despite the French working longer hours on average than Brits. They were followed by Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany to round out the top five European countries offering the best quality of life.
