82% of Brits say they would struggle without a car, the highest amount since 2006: A 2021 RAC survey of motorists has revealed the number of Brits saying they heavily rely on their car is at the highest percentage in 15 years. Furthermore, the number of people relying on their car in 2021 was up from 79% in 2020 and 74% two years ago.

The poll of over 2,500 UK motorists also uncovered that just under a third (32%) said they plan to drive to their workplace every working day; a big drop when compared to the 49% who said the same before the pandemic. In addition, most participants said they expect an average commuting week of three days.

When asked about alternatives to cars, 57% said they use a car because it is quicker and easier; whereas 53% said there were no feasible public transport options. The survey also revealed that around two-thirds of those who use a car to visit their friends and family said it is too far to walk or cycle the same journey.

Although fewer people are commuting, more people said they are relying on their car, found the research. Nearly half of those surveyed (46%) said they would use their car less if trains and buses improved in their area. This was down from 59% who said the same in the 2018 survey of motorists.

Almost nine in 10 (87%) drivers living in rural areas stated they heavily rely on their car, whereas just 77% of those who live in towns and cities said the same.

Rod Dennis, RAC data insights spokesman, said: “In so many cases, the car is faster, more reliable and is really the only feasible option for the sorts of distances people travel, whether that’s to the local supermarket a few miles away or to see friends and family on the other side of the country.”
