Just 8% of electric vehicle owners said they would consider purchasing a fossil-fuelled car in the future, reveals survey

Just 8% of electric vehicle owners said they would consider purchasing a fossil-fuelled car in the future: A survey has revealed that 91% of electric car owners would not even consider buying a petrol or diesel car, with less than 1% saying their next vehicles would 'definitely' be powered by fossil-fuels.
The study by Zap-Map polled over 3,300 electric car users to gauge public opinion on more sustainable modes of transport. In addition, Zap-Map wanted to find out how useful electric vehicles are in normal day-to-day life.
When asked about the longest journey they had completed on a single charge, 7% said they had driven over 500 miles without needing to recharge their electric car. Furthermore, just over half (53%) said they had driven over 200 miles, with just 15% saying their longest journey was less than 100 miles.
This data indicates that electric vehicles are more than capable of being used in every-day life, as it was found that the average distance driven on a journey in the UK in 2019 was less than nine miles.
The number of electric cars being sold is rising in the UK. One in five new car sales were for electric cars according to November 2021’s figures, an increase of 110% from November 2020. Furthermore, just under half the respondents polled (48%) said their current electric vehicle is their first, with 28% saying they had bought their most recent car in the last year.
On the other hand, just over a third of motorists said the upfront cost of buying an electric car would be a barrier preventing them from purchasing an electric-powered vehicle. When looking at where electric cars are most popular, the study found that six out of the top 10 UK electric vehicle hotspots are in London.
Melanie Shufflebotham, co-founder of Zap-Map, said: “We've seen that those who make the switch to electric simply don't look back. It's also clear from the distances EV drivers have travelled that concerns over range and other historical challenges of owning and running an EV are increasingly a thing of the past.”
