Nissan Leaf is the UK's most recognised electric car: A survey of more than 700 people asking them  to rank the most recognisable electric cars out of a portfolio of 16,  has found the Nissan Leaf came out on top. The car is currently the best selling electric vehicle on sale in the world.

The survey was carried out on behalf of DrivingElectric and found that while 94% of participants selected the Nissan Leaf as the most recognisable, the Tesla Model S came in not far behind, ranking in second position.

Last year, Tesla's Model X finished in third place, however, this year it was bumped down into fourth place by the Jaguar I-Pace.

The UK's fifth most recognisable electric car, according to the survey results was the BMW i3.

This year, the MINI Electric was a new entrant in the survey, but was the sixth most recognised by respondents, the only new car to place in the top half of the table.  Other new cars placed in the bottom half of the table, inlcuding the Vauxhall Corsa-e, Peugeot e-208, Honda e and Mercedes EQC.

Just 45% of respondents were familiar with the Smart EQ forTwo, a two-seater car that is already established in the market, which saw it rank bottom of the table in 16th place.

Editor of DrivingElectric, Richard Ingram, said: “The survey shows the brands that have been selling electric cars for the longest are the ones buyers are most aware of.

“But with the market now offering such a great array of fantastic plug-in models, it’s more important than ever that consumers do their research – and consider those models that might not be household names.”

The survey also asked participants about the car manufacturers who they felt were at the forefront of electric vehicle adoption, with Tesla taking the top spot, followed by Nissan, Jaguar, BMW and Renault.
