The best and worst car hire companies in 2024, according to Which? survey: A recent survey by Which? has revealed the best and worst car hire companies in 2024, with AutoReisen and Cicar ranked as the most highly recommended providers after receiving a customer rating score of 91%. However, if you wish to use the top two rated car hire companies you’ll need to take a holiday in the Canary Islands that’s where their services are available!

Which? asked 2,657 of their members to rank various car rental companies based on their experiences in the past 2 years. The rental companies were compared based on a range of criteria, including the clarity of extra charges, final cost, and fuel policy, as well as customer service, accuracy of description, price per week, value for money, condition of the car, ease of opting out of extra charges, and damage records provided.

The survey found only five companies other than AutoReisen and Cicar were able to achieve a score of 70% or over. Alamo (72%) ranked as the third best car hire option. Alamo was the best car hire option available in the UK. It received four stars for all categories except value for money and damage records given. The well-known rental company Enterprise also received a score of 72%, with Hertz (71%) and Centauro (70%) closely behind. Enterprise, Hertz and Centauro all came up with trumps for providing cars with a better age, condition and mileage than Alamo. Centauro was the cheapest of the four, but they only offer their services in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece.

Thrifty (70% - less data available), Europcar (67%), Avis (65%), Budget (63%), Sixt (62%), Dollar (55%) and Goldcar (52%) made up the rest of the list. Europcar was found to be the best option from the rest of the list, as it scored 4/5 stars on all criteria bar three. However, it is also the second most expensive option out of all the companies ranked, with an average rate of £511 per week. Enterprise costs the most to hire a car, averaging £539 per week.

The car hire company to avoid - based on this list, would be Goldcar, which received a customer score of little over fifty percent (55%) Goldcar achieved 2/5 stars on value for money, customer service and ease of opting out of extra charges. The rest of the criteria received a 3/5-star rating.

The purpose of the Which? survey was to ensure the public choose the best option possible when hiring a car, helping to ensure they avoid extra costs or problems along the way.
