Three-quarters of UK drivers would be happy for noise cameras to be fitted in local area: A survey by used car dealer, Choose My Car, has revealed that three-quarters of respondents would be happy for noise cameras to be installed at sites across their local area with the purpose of identifying and finding vehicle owners who drive illegally noisy vehicles.

The survey polled 2,000 adults across the UK finding that 71% would be in support of noise cameras being installed in cities, while two-thirds said they would be behind the move in rural areas too (67%).

Looking at the age group of respondents who were most in support of the move, the research found that younger drivers ages 18 to 34 were most supportive, with 74% saying they would be behind an initiative to rollout the use of noise cameras.

What is a noise camera?

Noise cameras use a camera and several microphones to detect the noise levels of vehicles travelling through an area. Evidence collected can be used by police to issue fines to those which exceed acceptable levels of noise (cars made since 2016 are legally not allowed to be louder than 72 decibels).

Noise cameras have already been trialled in Keighley, Bradford and are soon to be introduced in Birmingham, Bristol and Great Yarmouth.

The research found that when it came to support of noise cameras, male respondents were more supportive than females (75% versus 68% respectively).

Founder of ChooseMyCar.com, Nick Zapolski, said: “It’s not just about the noise that some vehicles – especially modified ones – make. Whilst that is undoubtedly annoying for road users and residents, it often comes with other anti-social behaviours.

“I believe that noise cameras could considerably discourage these sorts of dangerous activities, such as racing and reckless driving, and that could save lives. This scheme would be really important in reducing worrying behaviour on our roads, as well as noise pollution.”
