Disabled candidates sought after and welcomed by just 53% businesses polled: A survey of businesses has found that just 53% actively seek and welcome disabled jobseekers, with 4 out of 5 (80%) admitting they 'could do more' to attract disabled candidates.

The poll by Intelligent Resource, a staffing company and recruitment service provider, which is a partner of the Business Disability Forum (BDF), questioned employers and candidates to try to better understand the barriers faced by disabled people in the process of seeking employment.

The survey found that three-quarters of businesses believe that disabled people are met with barriers when they are looking for employment. It also found, however, that despite them, recognising that they face barriers, just 40% feel 'very confident' in supporting disabled candidates and employees.

The survey of 392 employers found that 44% felt candidates faced the most challenges at the online application and assessment stages, followed by face-to-face interviews (38%) and telephone interviews (31%). It also found that two-thirds of employers are recording disability data, highlighting their desire to attract more disabled candidates to their companies,

When asked about where they look for support in boosting inclusion, 80% said HR consultancies, while 67% turned to the BDF and 3/5 looked to internal employee networks. Only 7% said they looked to external recruitment providers to help support them in boosting disability inclusion.

Quality Assurance Manager and Inclusion Lead for Intelligent Resource, Sara Wright, said of the findings:

“While our research clearly indicates that some employers could be doing more to support disabled individuals, the fact that many are monitoring levels of inclusion – and seeking external support – suggests a widespread appetite to address this."
