Seven out of 10 companies believe that negative social media is the most damaging content for their business reputation: A survey of UK business owners or managers has highlighted the impact that online reviews and social media can have on business reputation, with 71% of those who have been affected by negative content online reporting that negative social media is the most damaging.

The survey of 500 UK businesses also found that more than half those who have been affected by negative content believe negative reviews are also damaging (52%), while nearly a third (32%) said that forum comments have hurt their company's reputation.

Conducted by online reputation management consultancy, Igniyte, the research found that 46% of respondents agree that the reputation of their brand or business has been affected by negative content online, with 40% saying they 'somewhat agree', and 28% disagreeing. The research also found that 39% have been affected by fake online reviews, while more than two-thirds (68%) are worried about future fake reviews.

Asked about their experiences with negative content last year, nearly half the business owners polled (48%) said their sales and reputation had been impacted by it.

More than eight in 10 (84%) said that reviews online are vital to both the financial, and reputational state of their company, however, according the survey findings, nearly half (47%)  admitted they do not actively deal with or respond to their online reviews.

Negative reviews ranked as the top threat to a businesses' reputation, followed by online crises (including Social Media crises), offline crises (e.g., operational or product failure), other businesses undercutting, incidents with employees or board members and lack of company social media activity.
