Majority of SMEs believe Government not doing enough to help businesses with sustainability: A survey of SMEs has revealed that more than half believe that when it comes to encouraging businesses to adopt more sustainable practices, the government is falling short.

The survey polled 1,000 SME business owners and found that more than half have made moves to introduce a more sustainable business model, however 62% said that they do not feel the government is doing enough in terms of incentivising them for adopting greener practices.

The annual Collaborate UK Report by CitySprint asked respondents about the measures they have taken to adopt policies to support sustainability within the workplace and the areas they would like to see more support.

It found that almost six in ten would like to have further information from the government to advise them about things they can do to adopt greener policies, with just under half (48%) seeking more information around changes in legislation relating to business sustainability requirements. The survey also found that 49% of SMEs want to see more investment in infrastructure to support their sustainability ambitions.

Asked about the impact of government measures to support and improve the sustainability of their operations, 43% of SMEs in London said the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has had a positive impact, compared to just 16% who said the impact has been negative.

SMEs outside of the capital, also believe that the introduction of propoosed 'Clean Air Zones' will not impact their operations negatively and will instead have an unnoticeable or positive impact.

Director of Business Development at CitySprint, Rosie Bailey, said:

“Despite positive steps, our annual survey continues to find that government support in this area is lacking. We’d encourage SME owners to look closely at their supply chain to see where they can make easy wins with their sustainability offer, and consider forming partnerships with other businesses that have areas of shared interest to share best practice and work towards a common goal.”
