Survey reveals nearly half of senior decision makers at UK companies have felt regret after hiring new staff in haste: A survey of senior decision makers at UK businesses has revealed that almost half  have a hired a member of staff that they later came to regret in the last year, with smaller companies being impacted to a greater degree.

One of the main issues when it comes to hiring was found to be 'settling for a candidate who does not have the required skills for the role' (61%), while more than half (56%) said that rushed recruitment processes were one of the main issues facing companies.

The survey by recruitment consultancy Robert Half also revealed that more than half the respondents polled said that in the current climate,  they have felt pressure to pay new employees a higher salary than their current employees (53%), which has also resulted in poor decisions. More than two-fifths of the respondents polled (44%) said that going forward, better vetting is needed and would be the most important step in improving the recruitment process.

The research also found that 70% of the businesses polled for the survey felt that the impact of making a bad recruitment choice is worse than it was a year ago, with 82% of SMEs reporting 'severe' negative impacts.

Matt Weston, Senior Managing Director for the UK, Ireland, UAE and Benelux, Robert Half, said: “Bad hires tend to happen when businesses are unable to take the time required to plan a process, assess candidates and do their due diligence, which leads to rushed decisions and making the wrong compromises, especially in today’s tight market.”
