18% of British adults consider donating to charity as ‘essential’: A survey looking at how charitable donations have altered due to the recent increase in the cost of living has revealed that one in five people will continue to donate as it is 'essential to do so'.
The study by Charitable Travel polled 2,000 Brits to understand their reasons behind decreasing or increasing their donations. The survey also found that three in 10 would reduce their donations to afford a holiday; with 23% considering holidays as an essential spend.
Furthermore, music and TV subscriptions were cited as essential spends by 15% of respondents; with one in 10 valuing their morning coffee.
When asked if they were happy with the current amount they are donating, half of those surveyed said they would like to give more to charity; with around one in five saying other costs and price changes have meant they have had to decrease their donations.
The study also looked into the different ways that people choose to give to charitable causes, with almost four in 10 stating they donate through bucket collections. In addition, 35% say they donate through their family and friends via sponsorships, with a further 12% saying they volunteer their time.
Melissa Tilling, founder and Chief Executive of Charitable Travel, said: “The devastating impact of the pandemic means charities need our support now more than ever, but the cost-of-living crisis has resulted in people having less and less disposable income, with many making difficult financial sacrifices. We know that holidays can be beneficial to our mental and physical health, especially during these tough times and the recent increase in demand that we’ve seen here reinforces this sentiment.”
