Charity word mapAlmost half of homelessness charities fear service closures, survey finds: A survey involving more than 350 homelessness organisations has found that 47% agree that the rising cost of living means they risk closure. The survey also found that 19% of respondents have already reduced services to meet the rising costs.

Homeless Link, the national membership charity for homelessness organisations, sent out the survey to 900 members, receiving 356 responses. The survey was conducted to highlight the effect of the cost-of-living crisis on the charity sector and how organisations are struggling to support people. However, despite many respondents predicting closures, 48% said that their services have been helping more people due to the rising cost of living.

Other findings from the survey revealed that 64% of respondents reported that the lack of inflationary increase to their funding would make services unviable, suggesting help is needed from the government if services are to continue. When respondents were asked to predict if their services would be closed within six months, 31% said they believed that they would be, which would be in addition to the 19% that have already made closures.

Derek Heath, the CEO of a homelessness charity, which rents 75 specialist properties across areas of the UK for vulnerable adults, said have had to pull out of a three-bedroom home for female ex-offenders because it was no longer affordable. He also stated it was the“first time we have ever had to give back a property for monetary reasons.”

*The research conducted by Homeless Link was conducted before the government announced the post-March 2023 energy support.
