Nearly one in five charity donors plan to leave a gift in their will, finds survey

Nearly one in five charity donors plan to leave a gift in their will: A survey of charity donors has found that almost one in five (19%) are planning to leave a gift in their will, which is up from 14% when the survey began in 2013.
The annual consumer benchmark study by Remember a Charity polled more than 2,000 charity donors who were aged 40 years and over, finding that while there has been an increase in the number of people who plan to leave a donation in their will, just under half have made the charity they plan to gift, aware of their plans (48%).
Of the respondents polled, one in 10 said that while they have not yet outlined their wishes to leave a legacy gift in their will, they are preparing to do so, however 9% of respondents said they are not in favour of leaving charity gifts when they die.
When it comes to preparing a will, the survey found that 62% of respondents had done so, with the likelihood of donors making a will increasing with age. While just 46% of people polled in their early 40s had made a will, this increased to 84% pf respondents over 70 years.
The survey also asked respondents who had made a will about any changes they have made to it. More than half said they have already updated it at least once, with almost six in 10 reporting that they would likely make amends to it in the future.
Rob Cope, director of Remember A Charity, said: “This continued growth in legacy giving is testament to charities’ increased focus on legacies and their willingness to collaborate, inspiring more people to leave a gift in their will and raise vital funding for charities across the country."
