The UK falls to its lowest ranking in the annual World Giving Index since 2020

The UK drops to its lowest ranking in the 2024 World Giving Index since 2020: The UK has dropped to its lowest ranking of 22nd in this year’s CAF World Giving Index. This is only the second time the UK has been out of the top 20 since the index began in 2010, the first being in 2020 when charitable activities were hampered by pandemic measures which led to the same ranking of 22nd place.
The World Giving Index (WGI) is conducted by CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) each year. This year they asked the following three questions to 145,702 people from 142 countries across the world:
1. Have you donated money to charity?
2. Have you helped a stranger or someone you didn’t know who needed help?
3. Have you volunteered your time to an organisation?
Respondents were asked to answer these questions in relation to their behaviour over the previous month. An average of the positive responses is calculated for each country, giving an index score and a global ranking. The lowest possible score is 0 points and the highest is 100.
It seems the UK has struggled to return to its ranking highs in the WGI since Covid-19 in 2020. Prior to the pandemic the UK’s highest position was third place in 2019; it’s overall index score is now just 49 points compared to 57 points a decade ago. Although over half of UK respondents this year had helped a stranger (55%, over two thirds had donated to charity (67%) and a quarter had volunteered within the last month (26%), over two fifths said they did not feel the UK was a ‘particularly generous country’. This sentiment seems to be reflected in the UKs ranking position,
Topping the WGI chart this year is Indonesia with a score of 74 (their seventh year in a row at the top of the index), followed by Kenya in second place (63) and Singapore a close third (61). On the opposite end of the index are Cambodia (22 points), Japan (20 points) and Poland, who had the lowest overall score of 15 points.
