More than half engineers working in Chemicals and Pharma sector are happy in their current job: A survey of engineers across twelve sectors has found that 56% of those working in the chemicals/pharma and medical sector are happy in their current job.

The Engineer's Salary Survey polled 845 engineers working across the industry to find out engineering salaries and engineers' satisfaction with how much they are paid for their work, as well as how happy they are in their role and how likely they are to look for alternative employment.

Engineers working in Energy and Renewables were the happiest in their current job according to the research (68%), followed by Food & Drink / Consumer Goods (67%) and Academia (64%), whilst the least happy were respondents from Aerospace (52%), Defence and Security (54%), Oil and Gas (55%) and Telecoms (55%). Engineers in Chemicals and Pharma ranked in eighth place, with 56% saying they are happy in their current job

.Average Salaries

The research found that the average salary for engineers working in Chemicals, Pharma and Medical was £55,985, a salary that two-fifths (41%) of respondents said they were satisfied with. In terms of comparability to other sectors, the salary for Chemicals/Pharma/Medical engineers ranked in eighth place for salary, with Oil and Gas (75,366), Energy and Renewables (£65,932) and Telecoms / Utilities / Electronics (£58,412) the highest paid sectors on average. The lowest paid sectors on average were Materials (£36,940), Aerospace (£52,129) and Defence & Security / Marine (£52,330).

In terms of satisfaction with their salary, engineers in Chemicals/Pharma/Medical ranked in seventh place (41%) with those who were most satisfied in Energy/Renewables and Nuclear (66%), Food & Drink or Consumer Goods (51%), Automotive (49%) and Defence and Security/Marine (49%). The lowest ranking for salary satisfaction were engineers in Academia (28%), Oil and Gas (29%) and Materials (29%).

Engineers working in Energy and Renewables felt the most valued (60%, followed by Food and Drink (58%) and Chemicals/Pharma and Medical (55%). The least valued, according to the poll, were from Rail/Civil and Structural sectors (30%), followed by Defence, Security and Marine (41%) and Materials (43%).
