47% of building professionals expect to make majority of construction projects green by 2021: A global survey has revealed the demand for smart, efficient 'green' buildings is set to increase further in the coming years.

The latest World Green Building Trends 2018 SmartMarket Report survey polled 2,000 people across 86 countries who work in the construction industry, including engineers, contractors, architects as well as owners and investors. The results of the survey suggests the demand for green buildings is set to further increase with just under half (47%) polled expecting to have up to 6o% of their buildings 'green' by 2021.

Dodge Data & Analytics who carried out the research said that in some regions, green building growth is set to double.

Changing perceptions

Results also reveal a shift in attitude and perceptions around 'green' buildings. Where three-quarters of respondents believed that green buildings cost more than non-green projects in the 2012 survey, the latest data shows the figure has now dropped to less than half.

The research also found social factors were driving the desire to invest in green buildings with respondents citing an improvement to health and wellbeing of building occupants, a sense of community and increased productivity of employees among the social benefits.

When asked about the benefits of constructing green buildings, the top reason selected was 'lower operating costs' (65%), with 'occupant health and wellbeing' the second with 58%.

Industry insights research director at Dodge Data and Analytics, Donna Laquidara-Carr said that the 'business benefits' offered by green buildings projects are also driving the growth.

"These benefits include eight per cent operating cost savings in the first year and increased building asset values of seven per cent for new green buildings, which are clearly influencing all those who do green building to deepen their engagement with green."
