65% of young construction workers say the industry was never suggested to them by career advisers: A survey of construction professionals into the perceptions of the construction industry has revealed almost two thirds did not have the industry suggested to them when they visited careers advisors.

The Buildings poll of 466 professionals, under 30 years old and who now work in construction or are studying for a related qualification also found that many respondents had not heard of industry initiatives to attract potential newcomers to the industry. Over two thirds (68%) had not heard of Open Doors, while 38% were not aware of the apprentice levy and 18% were unaware of the CITB.

The survey also looked at old attitudes relating to gender diversity and what the industry was doing to encourage more women into construction roles. It  found almost seven in 10 respondents felt the industry wanted to increase the number of women entering the industry and are actively doing so. However, when it comes to what was suggested to them at career advisor stage at school or university, just 23% said constriction was discussed as a possible career avenue compared to 45% of men. Over half (51%) of those polled said they did not feel construction offered as many opportunities for women as did for their male counterparts.

Also highlighted were the levels of confidence respondents have in the industry with 97% saying they were confident of being able to access roles once qualified, as well as 94% already feeling secure in their position. Seven in ten said they feel that construction careers are ‘satisfying and fulfilling’ with 89% focused on working in a senior leadership position, 38% said they aspire to reaching that level within five years.

The survey found there were high levels of satisfaction for young people in the construction industry, with 91% saying they are happy in their current role. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of men and 60% of women said construction was their first choice of career.
