Gender pay gap narrows in the construction industry, shows recent survey: The gender pay gap in the construction industy has closed in the past year according to the 20th RICS and Macdonald & Co. Rewards and Attitudes Survey.

According to 3,461 UK respondents, the gender pay gap between median salaries across property and built environment sectors is now at 19%. The report reveals that the industry is recruiting a more balanced workforce, which has led to the pay gap dropping from 36% to 20%

Last year's survey revealed the construction industry was one of the poorest for pay disparity. But according to this year's figures, women in London were paid an average of £43,000, £5,500 more than men, who averaged £37,500. Male workers are however still getting greater bonuses, particularly in younger age categories. 

The survey also found out that the industry is offering a better work/life balance to employees. Forty-six percent of respondents said that they are eligible to work from home when needed and  35% report being able to work flexible hours. In terms of benefits almost three quarters (74%) have an employer pension; 22% recieve family healthcare, and 37% are eligible for illness/life cover. 

Also highlighted by the survey is that 46% of respondents feel like their workplace offers a great workplace culture (36% felt it is poor). When it comes to diversity, 46% believe this is important to their employer, compared to just over a fifth (21%) who believe it is not.
