8 in 10 of students overall gave positive responses about quality of university teaching in National Student Survey 2022: A large-scale survey of students attending universities in England has revealed that 80% gave positive responses about the quality of their course and related university experiences. This was the same percentage as last year, but down on pre-pandemic levels when it was 84% (2020).
The National Student Survey is one of the largest of its kind in the world and was undertaken from January to April 2022, receiving 324,329 responses.
More than eight in 10 students agreed that university staff 'explained things well', which was the same as in 2021 (84%). While 78% said that teaching staff make their subjects interesting (both 2022 and 2021).
When asked if the course was intellectually stimulating, 82% agreed that it was, while 76% agreed that their course has challenged them to achieve their best work.
When asked about how they felt their course was being run, almost two-thirds of respondents agreed that it was well organised and running smoothly (65%) a slight increase from last year (64%). Seven in 10 (71%) agreed that any changes in the course were communicated effectively (compared with 70% in 2021).
Learning resources
The survey also revealed that more than three-quarters of those polled (77%) agreed that IT resources and facilities supported their learning 'well' -- up from 72% in the 2021 research.
When asked about how well the library resources at their institution (e.g., books, online services and learning spaces) have supported their learning, 83% agreed that they have, compared with 76% in 2021.
Looking at course-specific resources such as equipment, software and facilities, 83% agreed that they have been able to access them when they need to, which was an increase from 2021 (74%) when universities were still being impacted to varying degrees by the Covid-19 pandemic.
