Three in 10 teachers spent 10 or more extra days preparing students for GCSE exams: A study has uncovered that 30% of secondary school teachers spent 10 or more extra days preparing their pupils for their GCSE exams; with 31% of respondents not altering their students' preparations.
The survey by Tes polled over 900 teachers, heads of department and school leaders as exams returned to normal after two years of teacher and centre-assessed grades. Furthermore, 89% of teachers said they were either ‘concerned’ or’ very concerned’ about results day.
Just 8% of respondents said they were not worried about the exam results with a further 3% saying they weren’t sure.
The North East had the greatest number of teachers who were ‘very concerned’ about pupil grades (64%), whilst the region with the fewest teachers saying that they were ‘very concerned’ was the South East.
In an attempt to reduce the impact of the pandemic on school children, more information was given to GCSE students in February about their exams, with the aim of helping them focus on their revision. However, 35% of those surveyed said the information they received was ‘useless’.
One of the reasons given for this view was that many teachers feel the additional information about exams should have been presented earlier.
A spokesperson for Ofqual, said: "Our chief regulator, who was appointed last September, has visited schools and met students across the country. We have found that they have welcomed the return of exams as well as the unprecedented package of support that was put in place in light of the impact of the pandemic."
