A quarter of engineers looking to change industries in 2019: A survey by global technical recruitment specialists, VHR polled 500 people looking for engineering roles to find out more about their careers, their search for employment as well as what they want from recruiters.

It found that while three quarters (76%) had no plans to change industry this year – a quarter (24%) said they planned to.

The survey also found that almost eight in ten engineers (79%) are looking to upskill or learn something new in 2019.

When looking for a new job, the poll found that the opportunity to travel was the factor most respondents selected as important followed by learning new skills, location, working hours, working for a good company and then salary.

Respondents said the biggest obstacle they faced when finding a job last year was 'salary' followed by 'passport/Visas', 'location', 'age' and 'language'. Other answers given were re-location, time, no-vacancies and work-permits.

The poll also found that almost two thirds (64%) of engineers used a recruitment company to help them find employment in 2018.
