BAE Systems tops poll of most attractive engineering employers: A survey of 12,000 people has found that BAE Systems is perceived to be the most attractive place to work within the engineering industry; financially healthy and offering attractive salaries and benefits as well as good job security. The British multinational arms, security, and aerospace company also ranked in fifth place across all UK industries, behind marketing, media, IT and healthcare.

The research commissioned by Randstad UK polled 12,018 workers in the UK as well as 163,000 globally, in addition to 6,000 employers. It  sought  to understand more about what employees want from the organisations they work for.

Looking at the reasons why workers choose a new employer, the survey found that work-life balance was the most desirable factor, with an attractive salary and benefits offer in second. It also found that a quarter of UK respondents plan to change their job in the next six months, with 16% saying they have already done so. The  research also found that the proportion of people who said they were worried about losing their job was one percentage point lower than in 2022 (15% versus 16%).

Also highlighted by the study was that fewer employees are using social media platforms when they are job hunting, with Twitter seeing the greatest fall in usage. The most used for job searching were Facebook and Instagram, although numbers using this method have also fallen from 2022 figures.

Adrian Smith, senior director of operations at Randstad UK said: “Increasingly, people want to work in engineering. Despite this, the nation’s talent shortage means that even the most attractive organisations still have a job to do to find the people they need. The most pressing task for engineering firms is to remove barriers to entry for willing talent by offering reskilling and upskilling programmes. We also need to do more to attract more women into STEM subjects at both school and university for future talent pooling.”
