Seven out of 10 engineers have received a pay rise in last 12 months: A survey of engineers has found that 71% have seen their pay increase in the last year, up from 56% in the 2022 survey. The research found the average salary of engineers is £57,366.

The Engineer’s 2023 salary survey had responses from 891 UK engineers working across 12 sectors and was carried out in January and February 2023.

It also revealed that two-fifths of respondents are satisfied with the salary they are currently on (41%), with engineers in the Oil and Gas sector receiving the highest salaries (an average of £66,000). This was followed by Automotive (£63,282), Telecoms/Utilities/Electronics (£62,706), Energy/renewables (£61,395), Rail/Civil and Structural (£56,901), Aerospace (£56,437), Defence & Security/Marine (£55,684), Materials (£54,475), Manufacturing (£54,311), Chemicals and Pharma/Medical (£54,303), Food and Drink (£52,839) and Academia (£49,500).

Also revealed by the survey is that almost half the engineers polled (47%) said they were considering a change of job, up from 42% in the 2022 survey. The proportion of those who said they would consider taking a job overseas has also increased to 49%, from 45% in the last survey.

Employees working in Aerospace were the least satisfied with their salary (32%) with Rail/Civil and Structural engineers and Academia employees also recording lower levels of satisfaction (33% and 35%). The sectors with the greatest salary satisfaction were Oil and Gas (47%) followed by Energy/Renewable/Nuclear, Food and Drink, and Materials (all 46%). Overall, three in 10 respondents are unhappy with their pay, found the research (30%).

Robert Harper, President, Professional Staffing (UK), Staffing 360 Solutions said:  “The salary survey highlights both the prosperity of the engineering industry and the challenges it faces. The competition for talent remains intense as both employers and engineers strive to gain an advantage. Organisations are looking to reassess and enhance their employee benefits packages in order to stand out and attract top talent."
