42% of UK consumers are buying fewer food and drink items due to cost of living crisis: A survey of UK consumers conducted by DJS Research via our in-house panel Opinion Exchange has revealed that 42% are buying less food and drink items to help manage their household finances.
The survey polled 1,600 consumers in March 2022, asking them about how they have been impacted by the cost of living and what they are doing to weather the storm. It found that more than four in 10 households said they were 'greatly affected' by the current crisis (42%), with a further 55% reporting being 'slightly' or 'moderately' impacted.
The research found that Millennials are the generation most affected by the cost of living crisis.
While 42% said they are cutting costs by putting fewer food items in their shopping baskets, 63% said they were cutting back on eating out, while 55% said they have been ordering fewer takeaway meals. Amongst Millennial respondents these figures were even higher with 70% eating out less and almost two-thirds ordering fewer takeaways (66%).
More than half the consumers polled said that they were buying fewer branded food and drink items to help manage household finances, shopping for less expensive own-brands instead.
Also revealed by the research was that survey was that almost two-thirds were reducing their electricity consumption to save money, with the same percentage saying they have been reducing their gas/heating oil consumption (both 65%).
