67% Brits are eating food which has exceeded its expiry date: A survey of Brits has revealed that many people are now eating food which has exceeded its use-by date, with more than half (53%) also saying that they remove any 'bad bits' from food which has expired to make it fit for eating.

The Attest UK Food & Beverage Report 2022, included findings from a survey of 1,000 people in the UK.

When asked about the types of foods they are eating which is no longer 'in date', almost two-thirds (64%) said they have eaten crisps and snacks which have surpassed their use by date, while six in 10 (60%) have eaten biscuits and sweets, or cereal (54%).

While more than half were open to eating expired bread (54%), fewer people were sure about drinking out-of-date milk (29%) and even fewer said they would be willing to eat meat that has gone past its use by date. Almost a quarter (23%) said they would eat cooked meat which has gone beyond its expiry date, while just over a fifth (21%) said they would eat expired raw meat.

The survey also uncovered that the way people shop is changing due to the rising cost of food, with 42% saying they are now sticking to a strict budget, and more people are choosing to go without luxury items.

The number of people shopping at discount food stores such as Aldi and Lidl has also increased, according to Attest, growing from 24% to 39% in the last six months. Respondents are now spending an additional £8.40 per week due to rising inflation and increased food costs, according to the polling.

The research also uncovered that half the respondents polled (51%) are now buying cheaper foods which may be made from lower-quality ingredients, while almost one in 5 (18%) are buying less fruit and vegetables.
