One in seven people in the UK have faced hunger due to lack of money in the past year, finds survey: A new survey conducted by Trussell Trust has found that one in seven people in the UK have faced hunger due to financial problems. Disabled people, ethnic minorities, and carers are most likely affected by this problem, found the research. Almost 1 in 4 people from an ethnic background experienced food insecurity (24%), compared to 13% for white people. Similarly, 23% of unpaid carers had experienced food insecurity too, compared to 12% for non-carers.
The research conducted by Trussell Trust included a survey of 2,563 food bank users across the Trussell Trust network between May and August 2022. As well as that, a survey of nearly 4,000 of the UK population was conducted by Ipsos over the same period. The purpose of the research was to try and make the government strengthen the social security system in the United Kingdom and move away from the usage of food banks. The majority (77%) of the UK public believe food banks should not be necessary.
The research by Trussell Trust also found that almost 3 million food parcels were given out over the past year from the Trussell Trust network, between April 2022 and April 2023, more than ever before. This represents a 37% increase from last year, and over a million of these parcels were given to children. Findings revealed that 89% of people who had used a food bank in Trussell Trust’s network were receiving some sort of benefits from the government, but these were not enough to cover the costs of essentials.
A government spokesman said this: “This is not right. Food banks are not the answer when people are going without the essentials in one of the richest economies in the world. We need a social security system which provides protection and the dignity for people to cover their own essentials, such as food and bills.”
