Over a quarter of Brits said they are less likely to cook a Sunday roast due to rising costs: A recent study into how the cost-of-living crisis has affected the public’s shopping and cooking habits has found that 26% of respondents said they are less likely to cook a Sunday roast; due to rising energy bills.
 
The annual BBC Good Food Nation survey polled over 3,000 Brits from the age of five years old and above to uncover how the British public have altered their shopping and cooking to help save money. The rising cost-of-living has impacted everyone in different ways, with shopping and food being two of the most affected sectors.
 
When asked about other ways they save money through food, 28% said they plan their meals to use cheaper ingredients and so they waste less food. In addition, 23% batch cooking as their preferred way to spend less with a further 22% saying they freeze their batch bakes and heat them up at a later date.
 
Not using kitchen appliances is also a common way to save money, with 18% saying they no longer switch the oven on. In addition, one in five stated they are baking less biscuits and cakes due to the cost of energy.
 
The study also looked at how parents could alter what their children eat, with 15% of respondents saying they make their children packed lunches, instead of paying for school dinners.
 
The research also found that just over a fifth of respondents (22%) have bought less alcohol to cost cut and one in five are buying less meat. Dairy products, such as cream (13%) and butter (11%), have also seen a slight decrease in sales.
