Six in 10 UK consumers buy some of their groceries online: A survey has revealed that in the UK, 60% of shoppers purchase at least some of their groceries online, with 16% saying they order all, or most online.
The UK Online Grocery Report 2022 by Spryker polled 2,500 UK shoppers to understand more about their shopping experiences.
Asking consumers what could be done to make them do more food shopping online, 80% said a driver would be if the experience was improved, while 28% did say that they do plan to shop mostly online within the next couple of years.
According to the findings, shoppers prefer to have their groceries delivered to them (23%), rather than collecting them in-store (6.6%).
When asked about which brands they were familiar with, 77% said they recognised Uber Eats, with the same percentage referencing Just Eat -- and Deliveroo in third, with 74%. Surprisingly, just 63% recognised Amazon as an online destination for groceries.
Some of the emerging brands that were recognised by consumers included Getir (21%) and Gorillas (17%), whilst between 5% and 15% were in the know about Zapp, GoPuff and Jiffy.
Online grocery shopping in the UK is currently driven by 35–44-year-olds, who spend over a third of their grocery budgets online. However, older consumers are fast becoming online converts – in fact, over 55s are the age group most likely to shop exclusively online.
Spryker CEO Boris Lokschin said:
"The UK’s online grocery consumer has high demands, and they’re hungry for new experiences. If providers can deliver on product – with wider variety and higher availability – coupled with an exceptional customer experience, they stand to win these consumers over."
