Lancaster ranked as the third best English city to give birth, behind Gloucester and Plymouth: A survey into hospital satisfaction rates for maternity care has uncovered that Lancaster ranks as the best Northern city to give birth; ranked only behind Gloucester and Plymouth across the whole of the country.

The survey by Little Ones London polled mothers who had recently given birth, in an attempt to find the best place to give birth. The study looked at the amount of skin-to-skin contact, how little mothers were left alone when scared. and how much they were involved in decisions.

Leeds ranked fourth in the study, with a satisfaction rating of 8.74 out of 10, just 0.17 points off Gloucester. Newcastle, along with Lancaster and Leeds, make up the only northern cities in the top 10.

Lancaster (8.77)

Exeter (8.70)

Bath (8.69)

Newcastle (8.65)

Norwich (8.62)

Brighton (8.61)

Hereford (8.54)

When looking at which cities were best in terms of 'not leaving mothers alone' it was found that the northern cities performed best; Newcastle scored the highest with a satisfaction rating of 8.65 out of 10, followed by Lancaster (8.18) and Leeds (8.12).

This study provides a fascinating insight for soon-to-be parents as to the cities that offer an exceptional and smooth experience.”
