Three-quarters of healthcare workers have considered leaving the NHS in the last 12 months: A survey by the charity, the Healthcare Workers’ Foundation (founded by NHS workers for NHS workers and partners) has found that three-quarters have considered walking away from the NHS in the last year.

The survey also found that 30% reported a 'strong likelihood' of leaving the institution in the next twelve months and almost half said they would not recommend joining the NHS.

Also revealed by the research, which polled NHS staff and healthcare workers across the UK, was that of the 73% who said they had considered leaving the NHS in the last 12 months, more than a third (34%) said that when at work they have no access to staff rooms or rest areas.

When asked what they thought was the most important factor when considering a future in the NHS, almost all respondents (99%) said 'job satisfaction', followed by 'work environment' and 'pay' ranking third.

According to the polling, nearly a third of clinical patient-facing staff said they are 'likely' to leave the NHS in the next year - and the areas of the UK that are most at risk of NHS staff and healthcare workers resigning include Greater London, the South East and the South West.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Dominic Pimenta, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Healthcare Workers’ Foundation said:

“These findings will come as no surprise to anyone who has ever worked in the NHS, but we hope facilitating communication about this vital topic between the public and trusts will enable everyone to realise we are still not meeting the basic needs of our healthcare workers.”
