Three-quarters of medical trainees rate the quality of the teaching they have received as 'good' or 'very good :Three-quarters of trainees polled in the annual GMC National Training Survey have rated the quality of teaching they have recieved as 'good' or 'very good' - a slight dip of two percentage points since last year's survey.
The survey is conducted every year by the General Medical Council to give insight into the experiences of trainee doctors as well as their trainers in the UK. The findings are used to assess how standards are being delivered in primary and secondary care.
The 2022 survey was completed by more than 67,000 doctors and revealed that overall, trainees rate their training highly, and also, those who are responsible for training doctors in the UK are generally positive about their work.
Trainees in general practice were more likely to say that their training was ‘good' or 'very good' (87%) compared to those in medicine (67%), surgery (64%) and obstetrics and gynaecology (65%).
Looking at supervision, 87% of all trainees polled said the quality of their clinical supervision was 'good' or 'very good', while 83% of respondents said the quality of their experience was 'good' or 'very good' (85% in 2021). All specialities were found to have received similar results to last year, or a marginal decrease in positive responses, with the exception of pathology which was up one percentage point since the last survey.
Trainers
Survey responses from trainers revealed that 45% of those surveyed gave a positive response to the statement 'I am always able to use the time allocated to me in my role as trainer specifically for that purpose' with 31% giving a negative response. Trainers in Scotland had fewer positive responses (40%) and more negative responses to the statement (38%) than any of the other UK countries polled.
Three-quarters of the respondents overall said that if they have a trainee who needs additional support, the support from their employer or local education team is 'good' or 'very good', with 85% of GP trainers responding positively.
Three in 10 trainers, however revealed that they do not know what support is available from the statutory education body (SEB) for trainees who need additional support.
Nine in 10 said that they enjoyed their role as a trainer.
