Mining and quarrying has seen the greatest salary increase in last year: A study by UK Trading platform CMC Markets has revealed that mining and quarrying has seen the greatest salary rise in the last year, rising from average weekly earnings of £1,203 in January 2022 to £1,382 in January 2023 -- an increase of 12.95%. The study also found that the sector also saw a 13.82% rise in weekly earnings over the past five years.
CMC Markets analysed the latest data from the Office for National Statistics, specifically its Wages and Salaries Survey.
The second greatest rise was seen in Administrative and Support Service Activities, with weekly earnings seeing an increase of 12.66% from £490 to £561. This industry saw a rise of 26.56% in the last five years.
In third was the Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities industry with average weekly earnings seeing a boost from £854 to £940 -- up 9.15%. In terms of the increase over the past five years, it saw the greatest rise of all industries in the top 10, up by 27.87%.
The rest of the top 10 was made up of Manufacturing – Chemicals and Man-made Fibres, with average weekly earnings rising from £817 in 2022 to £888, an 8% uptick; Education (rising from £488 to £527 - rising 7.4%), Manufacturing – Basic Metals and Metal Products (£619 to £663 - rising 6.64%), Manufacturing – Engineering and Allied Industries (£770 to £720 - rising 6.49%), Electricity, Gas and Water Supply (£756 to £805 - rising 6.09%), Other Manufacturing (£584 to £619 - rising 5.65%) and Information and Communication (£1,016 to £1,075 - rising 5.49%).
