79% of senior tech decision makers are planning to increase MACH investment: Research into the adoption of MACH architecture has revealed that 79% of businesses polled in the U.K., U.S., and Germany  are intending to increase MACH elements 'over the next 12 months and beyond', while more than a quarter (27%) report they are expecting to do so in the next year.

The survey conducted by the MACH alliance polled 230 senior-level tech decision makers at companies with at least 5,000 employees and revenue of at least $500m annually, to learn more about its adoption in these key regions.

MACH architecture is a set of technology principles behind new, ‘best-of-breed’ technology platforms. MACH stands for: Microservices-based, API-first, Cloud-native, and Headless.

The research also asked decision makers about the key drivers of MACH, finding that improving customer experiences was the most popular answer given. Other drivers included speed (59%), privacy (56%), costs (23%) and 'cycle of release issues' (20%).

Barriers to MACH adoption included 'resistance to change' (40%), 'resistance to change from IT/implementation team’ (39%), 'reliance on current vendors' (35%) and ‘understanding longer-term benefits’ (33%).

According to the findings, MACH is more prevalent in Germany, with 60% of respondents polled saying they have adopted it, compared with 53% in the U.K., and 34% in the U.S.

The 2022 report published by the MACH Alliance asserts that the 'upgrade burden continues to distract IT teams', with 28% saying that they spend more than 12 weeks on upgrades per year. Almost a third said they spend 5-8 weeks on upgrades, while 13% said they spend between 9 and 12 weeks on them. Just over a quarter of respondents (27%) said they spend between 1 and 4 weeks on upgrades.

When it comes to budgets spent, the research found that for a quarter of firms, upgrades are costing more than a half of their IT budget. Two-fifths (42%) said they spend 36 - 50% of their IT budget on upgrades, while a quarter said they spend a 0 - 25%.  A fifth (20%) of respondents said they spent 51 - 75% on upgrades, while 7% reported spending 76 - 100%.

The research also found that 47% of the respondents to the 2022 survey aspire to be completely 'best-of-breed', compared to 36% in last year's survey.

When it comes to keeping up with customer demand, 82% of respondents said they are doing, however, just 59% said they can deliver customer expectation improvements at speed.
