Market Research Discovers Smartphones and Tablets Now in Half of U.S Households
October 2012 - Information Technology
A new study, conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, has revealed that half of U.S adults now have access to the web via a smartphone or tablet.
The survey of 9,513 adults showed that 44% now have smartphones - an increase of 9% since May last year. In addition, 22% of U.S adults now own a tablet, double the figure from 2011, whilst nearly a quarter (23%) of those who don’t own a tablet , plan to purchase one in the next six months.
The research suggests tablets running Android are growing increasingly popular. Of the tablet owners surveyed, only 52% said they have an iPad, a decrease of 29% from a year ago. Nearly half (48%) claimed they now own an Android device.
The results may also have a large impact on the way news is delivered, with nearly three quarters (73%) of adults who use their tablets for news claiming they read in-depth articles at least sometimes, whilst 19% do this daily. Also, 54% of tablet news users said they also get news on their smartphone, whilst 77% also recieve news on a computer. Half admitted to reading news in print. One in four use all of the above platforms to keep updated.
Over two in five mobile news consumers confessed they are receiving more news now, whilst almost a third say they are now aware of new sources.
